Ben Turns 30 and Reflects on CES, Leadership, and Lessons Learned

As CES Hire marks another busy year in the construction hire industry, its Managing Director, Ben, prepares to celebrate a milestone of his own; his 30th birthday. While he might joke about “feeling old,” his first decade in the business has already shaped CES in remarkable ways. We sat down with Ben to reflect on the journey so far, the lessons he’s learned, and what he hopes the future holds for both himself and the company.

Many people might be surprised to learn just how consistent CES’s leadership has been over its 42-year history. In fact, the company has only ever been led by three directors: Nick’s father Dennis, then Nick himself, and now Ben. That continuity has helped shape CES into the family-focused, customer-first business it is today.

Since stepping into the role of Managing Director, one of Ben’s proudest achievements has been building the strong, dedicated team that now powers CES. He describes them as a group who “serve our customers and our industry really well,” and it’s clear how much value he places on people; both inside and outside the business.

If there’s one thing the hire industry has taught him before turning 30, it’s the importance of staying adaptable. Each day can bring unexpected calls and last-minute changes, and Ben has learned firsthand that flexibility is key to great customer service. Plans may shift rapidly, but with the right team and mindset, CES continues to rise to every challenge.

As for the future of machinery, Ben’s ideal creation would be nothing short of revolutionary: a render or floor screed machine that turns up on site and completes the entire job itself. “We’re not quite there yet,” he admits with a smile, “but who knows what technology will bring?”

When reflecting on the transition into his thirties, Ben shares a mix of excitement and nerves. While it feels like a “big milestone,” he’s curious about what this next chapter will bring. One philosophy he’s carrying forward from his twenties is the importance of surrounding yourself with good people; friends, colleagues, and mentors who make both business and life easier.

Looking ahead, Ben hopes to continue future-proofing CES so the company can thrive for decades to come, just as it has for the past 42 years. On a personal level, he’s setting his sights on moving into a new house with his family; another milestone he’s eager to reach.

Of course, no birthday reflection would be complete without a few personal touches. When asked about his workshop abilities, Ben jokes that the team would probably prefer he used no tools at all, though he thinks he could safely manage a spanner or screwdriver. His go-to Greggs order is the sausage roll deal; “because I love a deal”, with a festive bake being the top pick if the season’s right. And when it comes to cake, the answer is simple: the more chocolate, the better. Butter icing included. Always.

As Ben steps into a new decade, his blend of ambition, humour, and genuine care for people continues to steer CES Hire forward. Here’s to the next chapter, for Ben, for CES, and for the future of the industry he’s helping to shape.
