Posted on 15th Oct 2026 by [Jessica](https://blog.ces-hire.com/author/jessica) [![Spraying Hemp: What Is It, What Are the Benefits & How Does It Work?](https://blog.ces-hire.com/hubfs/CES%20Hire%20Blog%20Spraying%20Hemp.jpg)](https://blog.ces-hire.com/spraying-hemp) 15 Oct #### **Could hempcrete be part of the future of sustainable construction?** As the construction industry looks for more environmentally friendly building materials and methods, hempcrete is attracting increasing attention. Made from natural hemp and lime, this innovative material offers an alternative approach to insulation and building construction, combining sustainability with impressive thermal and moisture-regulating properties. But did you know that **hempcrete can also be spray applied using specialist machinery?** [![Buy A Euromair Machine Today](https://no-cache.hubspot.com/cta/default/20165488/23d6ce44-3283-47ad-8c27-7380b1b46f3f.png)](https://cta-redirect.hubspot.com/cta/redirect/20165488/23d6ce44-3283-47ad-8c27-7380b1b46f3f) Earlier this year, CES Hire had the opportunity to work alongside [Build With Hemp](https://buildwithhemp.co.uk/) spraying lime and hemp, using specialist Euromair equipment. It was a fascinating opportunity to explore another application for our machinery and discover more about a building material that could play an increasingly important role in the construction industry. #### [![Spraying Hemp](https://blog.ces-hire.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Screenshot%202026-10-13%20141300.png?width=254&height=346&name=Screenshot%202026-10-13%20141300.png)](https://www.euromair.com/en/2-insulation/16-blowing-machines/18-blowing-machines/30865-turbisol-164-2-blowing-machine.htm) What Is Hempcrete? Despite its name, hempcrete isn't actually concrete in the traditional sense. Also known as **hemp-lime**, hempcrete is a lightweight building material made by combining hemp shiv (the woody inner core of the hemp plant) with a lime-based binder and water. The result is a breathable, insulating material that can be used in walls, floors, roofs and other suitable building applications. Unlike conventional concrete, hempcrete is generally **non-load-bearing**, meaning it is typically used alongside a structural framework rather than replacing it. It can be installed through several methods, including hand placement, prefabricated blocks or panels, and specialist spray application. [![Turbisol Spraying Hemp](https://blog.ces-hire.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Screenshot%202026-10-13%20141535.png?width=266&height=415&name=Screenshot%202026-10-13%20141535.png)](https://www.euromair.com/en/2-insulation/16-blowing-machines/18-blowing-machines/30865-turbisol-164-2-blowing-machine.htm) #### Why Is Hempcrete Becoming Popular in Construction? One of hempcrete's biggest attractions is its combination of environmental benefits and practical building performance. ##### 1. A More Sustainable Building Material Hemp is a fast-growing renewable crop that absorbs carbon dioxide during growth. When the hemp shiv is incorporated into building materials, much of that captured carbon remains stored within the finished product. This gives hempcrete the potential for a significantly lower embodied carbon footprint than many conventional building materials. Depending on the mix, sourcing, manufacturing and transport, some hempcrete systems can even achieve carbon-negative results. ##### 2. Natural Thermal Insulation Hempcrete offers both thermal insulation and thermal mass, helping buildings maintain more stable internal temperatures. This can reduce heat loss during colder months and help limit overheating during warmer weather. For homeowners and developers, this can contribute to improved comfort and reduced energy demand when incorporated into a properly designed building. ##### 3. Breathability & Moisture Regulation One of hempcrete's most interesting properties is its ability to absorb and release moisture vapour. This is known as being **hygroscopic and vapour-permeable**. Rather than trapping moisture within the building fabric, a correctly designed hempcrete system can help regulate humidity and reduce the risk of condensation-related problems. This makes it particularly interesting for sustainable new builds and suitable renovation projects. ##### 4. Acoustic & Fire Performance The porous structure of hempcrete can help absorb sound, improving acoustic comfort within buildings. When combined with an appropriate lime binder, hempcrete systems can also provide good fire resistance. Actual performance depends on the specific product, density and construction system, so tested specifications should always be checked. #### How Does Spraying Hempcrete Work? Traditionally, hempcrete has often been placed manually into shuttering around a structural framework. However, **spray-applied hempcrete** offers another installation method. Specialist equipment delivers the lime-based binder and hemp material to a spray lance, where the materials are combined and applied to the prepared surface. Rather than manually placing and compacting material, the operator can build up the hemp-lime layer through controlled spraying. Depending on the system and application, this can offer several practical advantages: - Mechanised material delivery and application - Reduced manual handling - Potentially faster installation on suitable projects - More controlled application across larger surfaces - Access to areas where manual placement may be less practical However, hempcrete spraying is a specialist process. The correct material formulation, machinery, spray equipment and application technique are essential to achieving the required density and performance. [![Mix Pro 100 and Compact Pro 45](https://blog.ces-hire.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Screenshot%202026-10-13%20141421.png?width=275&height=451&name=Screenshot%202026-10-13%20141421.png)](https://www.ces-hire.com/products/euromair-mixpro-100-paddle-mixer) #### CES Hire's Hempcrete Spraying Project with Build With Hemp Earlier this year, CES Hire had the opportunity to collaborate with **Build With Hemp**, a company specialising in sustainable hemp-based construction materials. The project involved spraying lime and hemp using a combination of specialist machinery: [**Euromair Compact Pro 45**](https://www.euromair.com/en/7-spraying/82-pastrous-products/88-exterior-spraying/30559-compact-pro-45-spraying-machine.htm) A professional spray machine used in the project as part of the lime and hemp application setup. [**Euromair MixPro 100**](https://www.ces-hire.com/products/euromair-mixpro-100-paddle-mixer) Another key piece of equipment involved in the project, demonstrating how specialist mixing and pumping machinery can be utilised for alternative construction materials. **Euromair Turbisol Blower** A specialist blowing machine designed to transport lightweight materials such as hemp shiv through a delivery system. Together, the equipment formed part of the specialist setup used to spray lime and hemp. Euromair also manufactures dedicated hemp-lime spraying systems, demonstrating how established construction machinery technology can be adapted for sustainable building applications. For CES Hire, the collaboration was a valuable opportunity to explore a different application for specialist spray machinery beyond traditional plastering, rendering and screeding. It also highlighted the importance of choosing equipment specifically configured for the material being applied. > [View this post on Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DYNOpGex94N/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading) > > [A post shared by CES Hire Ltd (@ces\_hire)](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DYNOpGex94N/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading) #### What Are the Challenges of Spraying Hempcrete? Although hempcrete offers exciting possibilities, it requires a different approach from conventional spray rendering. **Material consistency:** The ratio of hemp, lime binder and water must be carefully controlled to achieve the required application and performance characteristics. **Specialist equipment:** Not every render spray machine is suitable for hempcrete. The correct blowing, mixing and spraying equipment is essential. **Application technique:** Operators need to understand how the material behaves during spraying and how to achieve the specified density and thickness. **Drying conditions:** Hempcrete contains moisture that must dry out following installation. Temperature, humidity, ventilation and application thickness can all influence drying times. Correct training, material specifications and equipment setup are therefore particularly important. #### Is Hempcrete the Future of Sustainable Building? [![MixPro 14 and 28 1](https://blog.ces-hire.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Screenshot%202026-10-13%20141753.png?width=299&height=405&name=Screenshot%202026-10-13%20141753.png)](https://www.ces-hire.com/products/euromair-mixpro-100-paddle-mixer) With increasing interest in low-carbon construction, natural insulation and breathable building materials, hempcrete presents an exciting opportunity. It won't replace every conventional construction material, and it's important to understand its limitations. However, for suitable projects, it offers a combination of sustainability, insulation and moisture regulation that makes it worthy of consideration. Spray application also demonstrates how specialist construction machinery can support evolving building methods. For contractors already experienced in machine-applied rendering and plastering, hempcrete could represent an interesting area of future development, provided the appropriate training and equipment are used. #### Exploring Specialist Spray Applications with CES Hire At **CES Hire**, we've spent over 40 years working with specialist plastering, rendering, screeding and pumping equipment.
